Fr. Bill Cleary grew up in The Bronx, attending St. Margaret of Cortona School followed by Regis High School and Binghamton University. With experience of excellent parish and religious priests, he discerned a vocation to the priesthood and studied at the St. John Neumann Residence and then St. Joseph’s Seminary, in the Dunwoodie section of Yonkers. Ordained in 2004 by Edward Cardinal Egan, Fr. Cleary enjoyed a joyful first assignment at St. Frances de Chantal Church in The Bronx. Assigned to The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., for advanced studies in Sacred Scripture, he earned an advanced degree while meeting many new friends in the nation’s capital. Returning to New York, Fr. Cleary was assigned to St. Columba’s Church in Hopewell Junction, Dutchess County. After a few short but happy months there, he was assigned to the faculty of St. Joseph’s Seminary in the summer of 2012.
One of the great priests of the diocese advised Fr. Cleary not to teach only Scripture, but the love of Scripture as well. This is the philosophy that guides his classes at the seminary, as he tries to open the text and various interpretations to the students. Although his administrative responsibilities have increased over the years, he still has time for family and friends, reading, and sports. Fr. Cleary enjoys helping various local parishes on weekends and during the week. Additionally, Fr. Cleary has the honor of being the Yonkers Fire Department chaplain.
